“ We ask for your help. We seek refuge and plea for our safety. We don’t feel safe in Papua” were the words of the open letter given by the three Papuan Activists to the staff of the Australian Consulate in Bali on Sunday 6 October 2013 at around 0630 local time after they scaled the Consulate Wall and entered the Consulate Compound. However the three activists Rofinus Yanggam, Yuvensius Goo and Markus Yerewon were not seeking asylum for themselves but rather help for their indigenous community of Papua.

Papua is indeed not safe for the  indigenous Papuan population and even more so for those are active in speaking up about the truth of what’s going on in Papua and their families. Yet bizarre as it is to imagine at the same time Papua is totally safe for  the more than a million transmigrants that live there now and similarly for those who have investments there (whether local or foreign). As the latter are protected by the State of Indonesia through the military and police working with assistance from the Indonesian National Intelligence (‘BIN’), the State Intelligence Coordinating Agency (‘BAKIN’) and the Armed Forces Strategic Intelligence Agency (‘BAIS’) and groups of civilians which support the presence of the Republic of Indonesia in Papua.

The action of the three activists in scaling the wall of the Australian Consulate in Bali was done with the sole goal of requesting protection and help for Papua from Papua’s closest neighbour Australia which is both a United Nations (UN) member and the current Chair of the United Nations Security Council. The Government of Australia well knows of the suffering that is being experienced by the indigenous people of Papua and yet for more than 50 years the national governments of Australia have ignored the suffering of indigenous Papuans. The screams and cries for help from the indigenous community of Papua have just fallen continuously on deaf ears. There has been not a single real action taken to date by the Australian Government to help save the indigenous nation of Papua from the brutal cruelty of the colonizing domination by the Indonesian state. The Australian Government has even ignored the urging of Australian citizens for Australia to take a part in handling of and bringing an end to the humanitarian atrocities and political status of Papua. Although the Australian Government has often highlighted the human rights violations in Papua, it has been mere words and there has been no real steps taken to try and save indigenous Papuans from the threat of their race being totally annihilated.

The Papuan community is well aware of the importance for Australia of its bilateral working relationship with Indonesia, however in not responding to the cries for help from Papua at this time Australia is neglecting its responsibility as a member of the U.N Security Council. For 50 years there has been no response despite constant atrocities which amount to humanitarian evils against the indigenous peoples of the land. Happenings which amount to a creeping but certain genocide.

It is dearly hoped by the people of Papua that the action of the 3 young Papuans scaling the Consulate wall might open the eyes and hearts of the Australian Government and that of other nations. Such that they might take some steps and act on their responsibilities as members of the UN Security Council to save the Papuan nation from the continuing acts of violence against the indigenous peoples and the more subtle but destructive discrimination, marginalisation and being made an increasing minority in their ancestors lands. All of which are leading to the annihilation of the ethnic (West) Papuan race.

The Action in Bali was timed to occur at the time the Australian Prime Minister was arriving in Bali for the APEC Conference, also at the same time urging leaders of other nations who are joining the APEC conference in Bali to pressure Indonesia to bring an end to the problems in Papua. The Activists are also asking for unconditional release for the political detainees in Papua  and that Indonesian give access to international human rights persons and international media to visit Papua.
With this statement Front PEPERA West Papua:
  1.  Declares our full support for the action and demands of the 3 Papuan Activists that scaled the Australian Consulate all in Bali.
  2.  Strongly urges the Governments of Australia, Indonesia and USA in particular, together with other nations of the world, to take  real steps in response to the urging of the cries for help in Papua as conveyed by the 3 Papuan Activists on behalf of the indigenous community of Papua.
  3.  To the Australian Government to give protection to the 3 Papuan Activists who scaled the wall at the Australian Consulate in Bali.
For the attention of all parties concerned.
