West Papua, Merauke - We have more tragic news to report from West Papua as yesterday the Vice Chairman of the West Papua National Committee [KNPB]
in Payum, Merauke was brutally attacked and tortured along with many
other KNPB members by a mob of suspected pro-Indonesian "Red and White"
militia of the same kind as were involved in atrocities in East Timor.
This incident occurred at 23:00 in the village of Payum, Merauke District directly in front of the house of the head of the KNPB Payum, Merauke sector, Mr. Tersisius Gebze.
At the time of the attack and mass beatings by the Indonesian mob, they shouted out:
"These houses are owned by people who are pro-independence so they must be destroyed!"
Following the attack and persecution, a second victim was battered and severely beaten by the Indonesian nationalists.
Those confirmed tortured are:
Vice Chairman of KNPB in Payum, Merauke Tersisius Gebze and KNPB member Fransiskus Onggat Kahol.
Even now, at the time of this report, two victims who were knocked unconscious are still in the emergency care room in the Merauke hospital.
West Papua has recently seen a bloody surge of violence against the indigenous Papuans in the last few weeks which we believe to be orchestrated by the Indonesian military and intelligence.
In under one month, 4 Papuans have been murdered, and 12 more severely tortured with horrific wounds by Indonesians.

In under one month, 4 Papuans have been murdered, and 12 more severely tortured with horrific wounds by Indonesians.
The grave site of murdered Papuan hero and former KNPB Chairman, Mako Tabuni was burned down, Papuans on the border were shot at and 5 youths were stabbed repeatedly with bayonets by the Indonesian police.
The Indonesian military is creating chaos, violence, and increasing anti Papuan sentiment among Indonesians to try to ensure that the peaceful boycott of the Indonesian elections by Papuans tommorow will not happen.
On March 16th, Free West Papua Campaign founder Benny Wenda issued a statement ( http://freewestpapua.org/
This boycott has made the Indonesian government and military very scared because they know that when we Papuans refuse to vote for Indonesia, the international community knows that we are not Indonesians but Papuans.
It is for this reason that the Indonesian military is now trying to create further violence and tension in West Papua to try and blame it on our peaceful election boycott.
They have already closed the border, accused Papuan freedom fighters of “interfering with the Indonesian elections” and we Papuans have witnessed countless murders by so called “unknown persons” who are so often labelled by Indonesia as Papuans trying to disrupt their elections.
