Jayapura, 15/5 (Jubi) – The Jayapura City Police arrested two
college students for allegedly damaging campus facilities during a
protest related to the election of Chairman of Student Executive Body
(BEM) at Cenderawasih University.
Marsel Demotegai and Samuel Wamsiwor, both are students of the
Faculty of Political and Social Science, were arrested while taking a
rest in the BEM’s secretariat. They protested the arrest, which was
conducted without force.
“There is no violence but we are up set because they did it without a warrant,” said Demotegai to reporter in the Jayapura Police Office on Thursday (15/5).
Before their arrest, the Jayapura City Deputy Chief Police and his
officer came and brought him and his colleague Samuel Wamsiwor to the
Police Office.
Samuel Wamsiwor said he was surprised by the arrest because it was a
holiday and they were on the campus instead. “It’s just weird because
it’s an internal problem. It’s about the succession of the chairman. It
supposed to be resolved internally, no need to involve the police,” he
said.
Separately, the Deputy Chief Commissionaire Police Kiki Kurnia
confirmed the arrest of two college students. He said they were accused
of the destruction of the campus facilities on last Tuesday (13/5).
“Their lecturers reported them to the police,” said Kiki by phone. (Jubi/Indrayadi TH)
